THE NIGHTTIME SKY WAS streaking from midnight blue to a light blue when they emerged from the clearing overlooking the small village of Graysbridge below. Dawn was almost here.
Despite the occasional pain still lancing through her belly, Aurelia let out a whoop at the sight of the cluster of buildings.
Gavrilâs arm around her shoulder tightened as he exhaled sharply.
âI donât believe it,â he breathed. âYou did it.â
Aurelia gave him a sidelong glance. âWe did it. I wouldnât have been able to do it without you.â
Gavrilâs lips curved up in a sad smile, but there was a tightness in his jaw as he looked behind them. Aurelia noted how tired he looked, like his skin was almost translucent in the moonlight, stretched across the planes of his face. He hadnât fed anymore since Aurelia got her powers back, and it looked like he was at the end of his strength.
The village couldnât have come any quicker. Aurelia felt like she had nothing left, either. The residual pain from the spell that had hit her not only drained her but filled her with fear, as well.
But I wonât show that to Gavril. He needs me to be strong.
She tightened her hold around the vampire, pulling him closer. âIâm sure thereâs a nice warm bed for you and me down there.â She blushed at the thought of the two of them in one bed but didnât correct herself.
âI could sleep for a week,â Gavril lamented as they made their way down the hill.
Aurelia grinned at him. âI could sleep for a year, I think.â
âWe canât stay long.â
She frowned. âI know. But let me just imagine not moving for a long, long time.â
Gavril chuckled dryly. âAs you wish.â
Whether it was exhaustion or the prospect at finally falling asleep, they moved silently toward the village, their footsteps nearly stumbling. Between the two of them, though, they finally stepped onto the main cobblestone path at the center of the village by the time the sun peeked out from the hills surrounding them.
As they entered the village, Aurelia caught the eye of an old beggar woman on the footsteps of a shop, which hadnât opened yet. She peered at Aurelia, then shifted her gaze to Gavril, before covering her mouth with her headscarf and moving away.
Aurelia glanced down at her tattered, dirty clothes and gave a small laugh, shaking her head.
âWhat?â Gavril asked, his voice raw.
âI think you and I make a spectacle.â
He snorted tiredly. âIâm a vampire and youâre a powerful witch unlike any the world has seen for centuries.â
âWell, when you put it that way...â Aureliaâs coyness dropped away as Gavril staggered, and she barely caught him. The movement sent a spear of agony running through her midsection, and she fought to hold him up without groaning.
Wildly, she glanced around for an inn. She spotted the rustic gabled building nestled at the far end of the street. The front of the three-story inn was covered in green vines, and large windows overlooked the square.
A hanging sign swayed in the early morning breeze, labeling the inn as The Hanging Man.
